You Have a Degree but No Work Experience. What Next?
You Have a Degree but No Work Experience. What Next?
“You need experience.”
It is a frustrating response many graduates hear when applying for their first job. But how do you gain experience when nobody wants to give you a chance?
Here are four practical steps to take.
- Make National Service count. Highlight the tasks you performed, skills you developed and responsibilities you handled.
- Build practical skills. If you want to work in HR, practise preparing interview invitations, onboarding checklists and employee records.
- Apply strategically. Target graduate trainee programmes, internships and entry-level positions that welcome inexperienced applicants.
- Network professionally. Connect with HR professionals, former supervisors and people working in your preferred industry.
Remember: You may lack formal work experience, but you can still demonstrate initiative, practical ability and a willingness to learn.
For employers: Are you creating opportunities for graduates who need their first chance?
